Seventeen-year-old Ashlyn is one interview away from her future when she first sees the demons. She thinks she’s losing her mind, but the truth is far more frightening: she can see into the Darkworld, the home of spirits– and the darkness is staring back.

Desperate to escape the demons, Ash accepts a place at a university in the small town of Blackstone, in the middle of nowhere – little knowing that it isn’t coincidence that led her there but the pull of the Venantium, the sorcerers who maintain the barrier keeping demons from crossing from the Darkworld into our own world.

All-night parties, new friendships and a life without rules or limits are all part of the package of student life – but demons still stalk Ash, and their interest in her has attracted the attention of every sorcerer in the area. Ash is soon caught between her new life and a group of other students with a connection to the Darkworld, who could offer the answers she’s looking for. The demons want something from her,  and someone is determined to kill her before she can find out what it is.

In a world where darkness lurks beneath the surface, not everyone is what they appear to be..

Review:
Darkness Watching is a tale of demons and magic, that force a girl named Ashlyn to take a hard look at everything she thought she knew and open her eyes to another world that shouldn't even exist! She thought she was a normal teenager just trying to get into a good university when she starts seeing brilliant violet eyes watching from dark spaces in what seems like the middle of nowhere. She doesn't know why she sees them or how, but all she knows is this can't be normal. When she arrives at Blackstone College in the middle of the countryside, she starts to unwind a whole group of people that can see these voids too and maybe she isn't going crazy after all.     needs to find out not only about these people but about herself and where she comes from as well as what she is going to do about these demons.

This is a wildly different story than any I have read about demons. It was refreshing to read about a character and situation that I haven't read before and     really did a nice job of feeling out that never-before-seen plot with the reader. It almost seemed like you were experiencing everything right in time with her and it really made it enjoyable to read. Despite her self depreciating attitude,   was a strong character. She was brave, even when she thought she wasn't, and she didn't freak even though all of this was so new and terrifying! Add to   the other characters that surrounded her and it really made a great coming of age college story mixed with a paranormal edge.

I think that was the reason I enjoyed it so much. There was this interesting plot of only child moving away to college and living with other people her own age sense of almost a contemporary piece, but then it had this huge over-arcing paranormal plot that tied together so well that you got a great growing up story. There was just enough normal to balance all the crazy magic and demon things going on that it flowed really well without getting broken up in huge sections that don't seem to meld. Plus, the plot twists I never saw coming so any time a book can entertain and surprise me, I have to say I loved it!-My Opinion- Buy it!

About the author:

Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy and paranormal for young adults. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also wrote various novels and short stories. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, she can usually be found in front of her writing desk, creating weird and wonderful alternative worlds. Her debut novel The Puppet Spell, published in 2013 by Rowanvale Books, is a fantasy tale for young adults and the young at heart, inspired by her lifelong love of the fantastical, mythology, and video games. Emma also writes supernatural fantasy novels for older teens and adults. Her next book, Darkness Watching, is the first in the upper-YA/New Adult Darkworld series, and will be published in September 2013 by Curiosity Quills Press.

Review:

I never pictured saying to myself "I need more gargoyles in my life" but this compilation of stories might just have me changing my mind. In this book are three novellas all about the stone carvings you see on the facades of buildings and all over court yards around the world. I've personally never read a story about said statues, and don't know much about them unless you count the Disney movie Hunchback of Notre Dame and the cartoon series named after them, so when I was asked to read and review this, it definitely got my attention. Since there are three stories, I'll break them down into the cute, the romantic and the redemption.

The cute one was On a Wing and a Prayer, the story about a garden gargoyle who is desperate to protect the homeowner Bea from her horrible drug-dealing ex-boyfriend and his attempts to scare her. Craig really won my heart over because of how determined he was to keep Bea from harm, even when he knows she can't hear him. After some meddling by modern versions of Roman Gods, he obtains the ability to fly and in doing so giving him the ability to protect her. This story was punctuated by a lot of humor and an overall sense of whimsy, which was really nice. It did get intense for a while there but gave a warm and fuzzy feeling at the end. I really enjoyed it's ability to fit all sorts characters into a short story and still be able to tell me exactly what the main characters all about in so little words. As much as I wanted to more about what was going on in the story, such as why Jupiter would see fit to send major Gods to protect one human, at the end of the day it is a short story so I understood the restraint on story lines. In the amount of story I did read however, Craig was absolutely a hero that Bea deserved.

Romance fell in the middle story, Touchstone of Love, that also through in some time travel into the mix. Rose Waldman started her trip to London via France, where everything seem to going exactly how she planned. That is until she misses her connecting flight and ends up staying the night in a small village in the countryside. Being struck by lightening while out on a jog could make anyone a bit foggy but being thrown back into 13th century is down right disorienting. Even more brain rattling is meeting a sexy stonemason that takes care of her and helps acclimate Rose to being a women so far back in time. I'll be honest, Rose grated on me for a while at the beginning. In fact she made a comment about her sleeping with married men that just straight up made me dislike her. However, after going through the whole story between her and Julian, I have to say she made me a believer. The story was really romantic and the two of them together are just pure magic. It is rare that I find a couple rather than a single character really making a story worth while, but this one does just that.

The final story, The Miller's Daughter, was a redemption story if I have ever read one. Sentenced to die after being accused of sorcery, Merofled promises to rid her town of a gargoyle that has everyone in fear. However, after a series of events she finds out that this gargoyle is not what it seems at the surface. She has to convince the warrior Alaric to spare said gargoyle and save his life. This story to me lived and died by Merofled herself. In this case she succeeds in being a character that really enjoyed reading about. She is strong and independent, especially in a time that woman are generally not that. She sees what others refuse to see past the surface of monster that is the gargoyle and recognizes the good. That is something I love in a character and it can change the flow of a story in a heart beat. This one does that and really made me love both heroine and monster by the time is was done.

Overall, these novellas were really great. My favorite of the three was the story of Craig the garden gargoyle simply because it was fun along with being intense, which is hard to accomplish. However, the three are very close in terms of which I liked more so that isn't saying much. If there was one reason I could give you to go out and read this anthology is simply because how many books can you name that involve gargoyles? And how many of those entertained you as much as these did me?

I didn't think so!- My Opinion- But it!

Excerpt from Touchstone of Love by Beth Barany

Julien of Beauvais stomped through the edge of town, through the fields and the stormy dark. He didn’t care about the wet and wind. He needed to find peace, he needed to find inspiration. It was time that he showed Master Stonemason Bernard de Chantilly all of his skill and artistry and present his master work to the community and get his approval, even if the master stonemason said Julien could not present his work at Michaelmas in five days.

The master stonemason didn’t like him and had not allowed him to present the previous year. But this year would be his. It was time he showed Master Bernard that he was ready to become a master mason and travel as a free man. His training was complete. He’d become a journeyman and done a short trip to Paris with Master Bernard a few years ago. Yet, most men at his age of twenty-six years had already started their own houses and were busy at work on the new cathedrals sprouting all over France.

He wanted to travel to Amiens, or Rennes, and direct his own house, with a woman at his side, and his own apprentices, and a passel of children. The time was now. His time. Oblivious to the cold and the wet, Julien stomped through the field in anger.

Not only was Master Stonemason Bernard a barrier to his dreams, but so was also Marie-Jeanne, his intended. She’d betrayed him with that farm boy from the count’s household. How was he going to create a home when his betrothed was ready to run off with another?

That was why, in his anger, he’d messed up the day’s stone carving work and had been relegated to sorting and breaking granite blocks for the other apprentices.

The rain pelted his face as Julien stumbled over something. He lost his footing and slipped to his knees. He put out his hands to brace himself and felt something soft. Soft and warm.

As gently as he could, as if he were handling a new-born lamb back at his parents’ farm, he felt for the shape of the soft and warm, and unmistakably touched a breast. A woman fallen in the fields. In the cloudy night with no light of the moon or stars, he reached out to learn more about her. She was alive by the warmth of her, and by the strong pulse at her throat, and not long outdoors, as her skin wasn’t completely chilled. He couldn’t leave her, so he scooped up her unconscious, naked form and headed for his workshop hidden in a copse of chestnut trees outside the walls of the town.

Once inside his small workshop, he stoked the fire under the cook pot. He rushed to cover her with his blanket and rubbed the hands and feet of the woman, something he’d seen the old midwife do to women who sometimes fainted in the fields. The woman breathed deeply, but remained asleep.

She was naked, curved in all the right places. Clearly well fed, luscious, but quite improperly dressed for a fall night, as if she’d been bathing and wandered off from her task.

Maybe she was under some spell that made her sleep. While he was a god-fearing man, and worshipped Mother Mary, he knew magic was in the land. He felt it when he worked the stone every day, but never talked about it.

The woman appeared calm, even peaceful as she slept. Definitely a woman, not a girl. Her long golden locks had come loose from her tie. She had rosy cheeks, pink lips, an angular nose, and a long column of a throat. Her chest rose and fell with even breaths.

What color were her eyes? He pulled the wool blanket up under her chin, and tucked it around her body to keep her warm. A tiny waist, a warm shapely rump, long legs, strong feet—he noticed all that as he chastely tucked the blanket around her. He’d noticed that her palms were strong, with callused, long fingers, almost as big as his. She must be a farmhand from a neighboring village, but he didn’t recognize her.

She was almost angelic in how she slept. His troubles forgotten, he made for his worktable on the other side of the one-room shed and picked up his chisel.

He’d found the inspiration he needed to start his work of art.

About the book

Once upon a time, there was an editor with a fascination for the Tarot. She was struck one day by a crazy idea. "Hey," she said. "What if twenty-two writers each wrote a story about the twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana of the Tarot and were fashioned into an anthology?" The idea would not leave her alone. And thus, the Allegories of the Tarot was born. Crowdfunded by a campaign on Indiegogo with the help and support of an amazing group of writers, twenty-two stories were crafted around the mysteries of the Tarot. The group includes a Pushcart Prize nominee, a Pulp Ark nominee, a former Bigfoot researcher, a journalist, an award-winning YA author, and a Rhysling Award winner. Professional writers, new talent, and a range of genres boggling the mind: Horror, Speculative Fiction, Bizarro Fiction, Erotica, Mystery, Humor, Paranormal, Epic Fantasy, Literary, Romance, and Historical Fantasy. Early readers have fallen in love with the Allegories of the Tarot

"Allegories of the Tarot Anthology is a magical book. Magic that will keep you turning the pages. There are muses, demons, psychics, evil, and more! I shivered, I laughed and I even cried. Magic, I tell you. Magic." -Julie Affleck "Reviewing an anthology is slightly more difficult than discussing a book or comic because the tone varies from author to author. However, Allegories somehow flowed together as a well-matched whole. The project ended up feeling like several beads strung together to form a beautiful necklace that were more amazing for being paired together." -Jodi Scaife "All twenty-two stories in this volume are, in a word, superb. I found myself scouring the Internet as I read it; every story made me want to go find more work by its author. The ultimate compliment I can give Allegories is to say that when I finished it, I thought how I envy those who haven’t read it yet." -Lisa Millraney

Review + Blog Tour +Giveaway: Moirai by Ruth Silver

Aberrant
Series- Aberrant Trilogy # 1
By Ruth Silver
Ebook Publication Date: April 17, 2013
Genre- YA Dystopian

Blurb:
In the future dystopian society of Cabal, the government instills equality for all and offers its citizens the perfect system.  There is food, shelter and jobs for everyone.  The one requirement is to follow the rules without question, including the government's match in marriage and "The Day of the Chosen", a lottery that randomly selects families to conceive children as natural means hasn't existed in generations.  Following her eighteenth birthday, Olivia Parker accepts her requirement to marry her childhood best friend, Joshua Warren, and is eager to start her work assignment and new life when it all comes abruptly to an end as she's arrested and thrown in prison.  The only crime committed, her existence.  Olivia is unlike the rest of the world born not from "The Day of the Chosen."  The truth haunts the government and puts her life in grave danger as one simple fact would destroy the perfect system.

With Joshua's help, Olivia breaks free of prison and is forced on the run.  Together they set out to find the promised rebel town in search of a new home and new life together.  Their situation seems less than promising as they reach the town of Haven.  New rules and customs must be adhered to in order to stay.  Leaving would mean most certain death in the large expanse of the Gravelands.  Time is running out as the government mounts an attack to destroy Olivia and bury her secret with her.  Thrown into a world unlike their own, they must quickly adapt to survive.

Review:
What do you get when you combine Divergent with The Hunger Games and sprinkle in a little Captain America?

Aberrant.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines Aberrant as: adj. Departing from an accepted standard; Diverging from the normal type. I was quite surprised to find that this book fit that definition very well, to the point where it stood out among a genre that is overflowing with options to choose from and made itself different. We meet Olivia in the city of Genesis, a town that was set up as a breeding city after the 4th world war and a plague decimated most of the world and left the population unable to conceive naturally.

At least that's what they all think.

Enter Olivia Parker, 18 year old daughter of a widow, on her matching ceremony day. Nervous just like the rest of her class to find out who the government has chosen her to spend the rest of her life with within her own graduating lot. 18 years old and terrified of what's gong to happened, Olivia is matched with Joshua Warren, there are worse things than being paired with your best friend since the age of 5 so thins seem to be looking up, until she is arrested hours later by the governor and thrown in jail....

What for you may ask?

Olivia is the only person on the earth that can conceive. Her mother boar her and now everyone thinks that has been passed to her. The government wants her either dead or in one of their labs, but Joshua's mother helps them escape to a town outside of Genesis named Haven, a city part of the Rebel Alliance trying to rise up against government control. The feelings of relief and freedom soon evaporates when the plans of the Rebel Alliance are spelled out for Olivia, but what does this mean for her and her future? And what does it means for her feelings towards Joshua? Will they stay in Haven? Will the government find her?

SO MANY QUESTIONS!!! I'm sorry but I'm not going to answer ANY of them because YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK! I'm going to give you the main reason I feel this way.

Main. Female. Lead.

I loved Olivia. What I require for me to like a main character, strength, poise, a little vulnerability and resolve, she possess. I felt like she never wavered from what she thought was right and what she wanted. Yes, plans changed a number of times but although the grander scheme shifted almost from page to page, at the core of the story was one girl who might be special but really lead with her heart first and foremost and then with her head. It worked for me, she didn't just do things for a boy and she didn't turn her back on anyone for the greater cause, Olivia balanced out what was right and moral or what she felt was her duty with this new found freedom of doing things her way or what she wanted to do not what everyone else told her to do. That is BRILLIANT. A girl who can stand on her own two feet and still love someone in a natural and not-immediate manner? WE NEED MORE OF THIS IN LITERATURE.

Olivia Parker sold the book for me, but I really did love the whole package. You get a clear picture of what world these characters are living in and that world is massive. Not only do you have government and rebels and gravelands (the nasty open deserts between cities) but you can see the clear distinction of environments as it changes. Taking great characters and putting them into a complete setting is not something that is easily found and this book has it! Add in all the unique things that you'll find scattered everywhere within the story and it made Aberrant one of my favorite books of the year, I CAN NOT WAIT for a sequel!!!-My Opinion- Buy it!!

Moirai
Series -Aberrant Trilogy # 2
By- Ruth Silver
Publication Date- September 26th, 2013
Genre- YA Dystopian

Blurb:
Olivia has been on the run from the government of Cabal since the marriage ceremony. Finally settling in and finding herself a place to call home, in Shadow, Olivia and Joshua are preparing for the uprising that they and the rebel alliance have been planning for months.

With new abilities and special talents, from Mindonsiphan, Olivia learns that she can do more than most ordinary eighteen year olds. Learning both to hide and perfect her skills will be one of the biggest challenges she'll be forced to face.

A constant rollercoaster of emotion and adventure await Olivia and Joshua, as they embark on a journey to the rebel city of Torv, and what was once home, Genesis.

Review:
Moirai picks up 7 months after the conclusion of Aberrant and we find Olivia and company preparing for an assault on Genesis.  They are goig to launch a major strike at the Governor's Ball, thus taking out all of Cabal's leaders in one strike. Olivia and Joshua are training hard to learn more and more about the abilities that the surgical procedure has given them and also trying to make a home for themselves in Shadow. Along the way to the final battle, there are quite a number of twists and turns to go through and of course there's always the "things are not always as they seem" to traverse.

Olivia really grew up in this installment for me. She went from being a naive young girl thrust into a world of rebellion and mystery about what the was, to a young woman who stands her ground and has a better understanding of who she is and what she believes is right. That was great to see a character grow that much in one story. I think Adelaide had the most impact on how we, as the reader, saw Olivia. She had another person to be responsible for (Joshua doesn't count he can look out for himself too) and how she handled that. I'd agree just by her taking a leadership role in the Rebellion and how hard she trains that Olivia has matured but Adelaide is the most obvious way that the author is showing progress instead of complacency.

Olivia was the focus of this book, for good reason, but I would have loved to hear more about what Joshua was doing throughout. We knew he had gotten all these crazy awesome technology abilities but we never saw much of it in action. That along with several other story lines such as the city of Torv and Joshua's father, would have certainly peaked my interested. Really the world of Cabal and the rebellion is fascinating and I wish we had enough time to find out everything about it! Including all these feelings I got while reading about certain people.

Torv and all of it's characters bother me.....a lot. I can already feel this sense of unease with people like Chloe, the council and this mysterious "board" in Torv that really made makes me nervous about what's coming. I wish we got a chance to flush that out a little more. Plus, Chloe's husband?? WHAT?? I'm not going to say anymore because it will certainly spoil it for you while reading, but let me just say this: Moirai just threw one hell of a grenade into this series for me in the most amazing ways. Touche, Ms. Silver, Touche.-My Opinion- Buy it!
