Review: Sworn to Transfer by Terah Edun

Blurb:
Eighteen-year-old companion trainee Ciardis Weathervane has won the friendship of the royal heir and saved his claim to the throne. Yet her interference in the inheritance rights leaves more harm done than good. The Ameles Forest lies unprotected and its inhabitants are dying.

As humans begin to die in gruesome deaths, the Emperor dispatches the royal heir to the forests with the solution to the kith concerns.

With enemies closing ranks in Sandrin, Ciardis can little afford to leave the city’s nest of vipers to take on a new task. But she’s given no choice when her loyalty to the crown and courts are called into question.

To keep the Companions’ Guild happy and the favor of the Imperial Court, Ciardis will be tested in frightening new ways, especially when she’s faced with an obstacle that could risk the lives of her friends and the family she never thought she had.

This second novel continues the story of Ciardis Weathervane from Sworn To Raise.

Review:

Coming out of a great opening book in Sworn to Raise, I was looking for two things: flow and growth. I got the flow I wanted right out of the gate when Sworn to Transfer dove right back into the story of Ciardis and the prince. This time around we find Ciardis being pulled in all sorts of directions, all while learning to harness her acquired family powers and making them stronger. The list of enemies is getting longer and the urgency to be powerful and help Sebastian keep the throne she saved in the first book. Their relationship, however, seems to be going threw some growing pains as any NORMAL teenage interaction would.

That relationship and other things that happen in the story was the first part that really stood out for me. Ciardis is only 18, and having just arrived in this world of courts and royals, I felt it was normal for her to go through a term of naivety and get burned a little. What comes out of characters learning lessons from bad situations is their true colors, and Sworn to Raise accomplished that. She is going to continue to go through rough things but in this book, she survived and she is more mature and smarter because of it. Ciardis grew up a lot in this installment and that's what I expect out of a great book.

That growth is not only found in the characters but also in the writing. I love to see an author improve as a series goes on and it is noticeable here. This is a fantasy story, with a world that is not of our own, so that means there is not only a character development story line going on, but we are still exploring the world around said characters. That is so hard to do as a writer and Sworn to Transfer just gets better and better at telling me what is around the world we are reading about. This is hard and even harder to indubitably do it better than the first book, that was still awesome. I like where we are going in this story and it never gets boring. Sworn to Transfer does it job as a sequel by expanding our knowledge and propelling the characters so that we may continue down a path that is both compelling and original. In short, I loved this one too and can not wait to read on! - My Opinion ***** 5 Stars!
