Review:
Apparently FBI/CIA/DEA stories are becoming a favorite of mine because from the second I started reading about Elle and her CIA secret missions I was hooked. We meet Elle in her final year of college and going through some pivotal moments that are changing the direction she thought her life was heading. She is wicked smart and graduating isn't a problem but the 10 year plan she had in her head seems to come to a complete halt when her boyfriend is caught cheating. Enter the CIA and hot supervising officer named Preston with a new challenge to help them with cases. Of course she will take the opportunity to help and she is more than capable but she doesn't know how this will change her whole outlook on her life and future.

Elle was an approachable character in my eyes. She wasn't the hardcore government agent who kill you with her pinky finger, but more of the nerd/smart/computer-y type of person. She had a strength in here that I'm not even sure she realized throughout the story, but at the end of the day she is going to find you hacking a system over busting in your door. It worked for this story because of how much growth you see from beginning to end. She builds her confidence both as a techy and as a woman throughout and that's what I love to see in a female lead. She only bothered me when it came to her ex-bf Adam and his cheating. She was going to take him back, MULTIPLE TIMES, even though he was clearly alright with cheating. That is never cool with me, I wish she just had the gumption to say scram and that be that. I did, however, understand why it took her longer to really get that it wasn't something to forgive and look past. She came from a divorced home where she never felt comfortable interacting with her parents because of it and she was so focused on making her life plan work that it got in the way of the logical side of her brain. The part that looked at data and found patterns and loved those patterns. I did appreciate the fact that she slowly came to terms with everything around her and really made a gut decision that was good for her.

The relationships with other people where what spurred this book on for me. Of course there was all the high stakes danger and CIA-ness going on which was fascinating, but the way Elle and Adam, or Elle and Preston or even Elle and the CIA interacted with each other was what made this book awesome. Character development and dealing with situational problems moved this story along and fast, especially at the end of the book. Preston and Elle's vibes were hot and heavy enough that you could feel their connection through the pages, even if they didn't even know what was going on at first. Adam is just a tool, but at least he was a helpful tool to get Elle where she needed to be in the end. The crime fighting college nerd will have you intrigued from start to finish and really love reading about her coming-to-adulthood phase.-My Opinion- Buy it!

Missy Marciassa loved getting lost in novels from the time she could read, so it’s no surprise she wanted to write. Her very first “novels” were re-writing the books she read to get the endings she wanted in second grade. Missy continued to read and write through grade school and high school.

After becoming rather disillusioned with fiction after writing literary criticism as an English major in college, however, Missy focused on her enjoyment of learning about people and studied psychology. Reading fiction fell to the wayside with all the reading and writing required for college and graduate school, but once Missy became a doctoral candidate, she rediscovered her love of fiction. As if able to read my thoughts, he leaned in even closer, afford- ing me full access to his aroma, and in a husky, almost whisper beseeched, “Please . . . tell me your name.”

I have no logical explanation for my body’s reaction to his hushed entreaty. My pulse flew matching my heart rate, while every pore and fiber of my skin went on high alert, going hot and cold virtually simultaneously. For once, I was grateful for the dark and the cover it provided my blushing face.

      The worst part of the whole thing was that I had the distinct feeling Merc not only knew what embarrassing reactions his close proximity caused in my traitorous body, but he intended on eliciting just those responses. Whether it was my sapped energy from the drama of the night or my own sad lack of experience in the area of male/female relations, I had no resources available to me to mount a proper defense against him. In all honesty, I couldn’t imagine why I should. After all, I knew plenty of girls that would have been on this guy like “white on rice.” Why should I get bogged down with details and unanswered questions like: Who was he really? Why was he being so nice to me? Why hadn’t Mrs. B. and Willem mentioned him?

      Why should I look a gift horse in the mouth? If this “uber- hot” boy wanted to be my “knight in shining armor,” why shouldn’t I let him be just that? I had never been anyone’s “damsel in distress,” and it certainly wasn’t because I had some feminist axe to grind. No, that wasn’t it at all. It was because no one had ever applied for the position. So now I was going to ignore the warning bells, silence my fears and pack away my paranoia. For once, I was going to be the one with the romantic story to tell at the lunch table on Monday, instead of the one listening on the far fringes and replying with the obligatory “oohs” and “ahs” to the stories told by all the braver, more beautiful, more fortunate girls.

      Having solved my inner conflicts, I answered him with a breath- less and what I hoped was sexy voice, “Grace, my name is Grace.”

      I wanted him to say something like my name was beautiful. That would play well with the lunchtime listeners. But, to my surprise, he seemed almost irritated.

      “Ha . . . ha ha,” he barked a short laugh. “Yeah, that’s about right. Well, come on, Grace – let’s get you home.”

      I was a little disconcerted by his reaction. Huh . . . weird. What should my name have been? Veronica . . . Candy . . . Jinx?

      Never one to keep my mouth shut, I opened it, ready to ask him if he preferred stripper names, but before I could get a word out Merc’s whole body stiffened and he jerked his head sharply to the right. I strained to see what he saw or heard to create such a reaction in him. The only thing visible was the dim outline of the tremendous back portion of the mansion that was softly lit by land- scape lighting buried deep in the bushes.

      I looked at Merc, wanting an explanation for his behavior. “What’s the problem? Did you hear something . . . somebody?” I whispered. If he had heard something, then he had better ears than I. Of course, I was hyper-focused on the visual treat that was standing next to me. A hurricane could have blown through, and I might not have noticed.

“I'm fine!” I pushed harder on the gas. “They can't be that far ahead of us.” I just hoped we were headed in the right direction.

We drove another twenty minutes north as I moved off the dirt road and onto grass. I glanced back at Rane. “Do you think Craynor could have found a place in Haven to keep Joshua?” “I don't know. Not much was left. There could have been a cellar or basement abandoned that didn't get struck. That's how I survived,” Rane admitted. It at least gave me hope. As we drove north, the rain stopped and the clouds parted. Cresting a hill, I slammed the brakes as we jolted to an abrupt halt. “What the hell?” Gavin's voice echoed as the seatbelt restrained him and his arm shot up on the dashboard to steady himself. A few feet away, I saw outlaws with weapons pointed in our direction. “Hurry up!” His voice threatened in my ear as I slammed on the gas, but our car wasn't going anywhere: the tires had blown from spikes in the road. Locking the doors hadn't helped. They busted the car window and flipped the lock, opening the door, dragging all three of us out.  

Review:
As I sit down to write this review, it is bitter sweet. This series has been a great surprise in a year where I read close to 300 books. The three of these being some of my favorites, it comes as no surprise that the ending to this epic trilogy did not disappoint me. So as we move into the new year, I was excited to see Isaura come across my email to end the year on a high note, but a sad one as well. I fell in love with Olivia, Joshua and all the other character from the future country of Cabal and really cared about where they were going to go from the end of the second book to here.

I have to applaud the author because the story never got redundant or boring, she kept it fresh and introduced new and invaluable characters to the series at exactly the right times, at places that the main characters either needed them or need them to exist to defeat. For example, Isaura and her crazy evilness was necessary to progress the new government and where these towns where going after the revolution started by Olivia and crew in the second book. Henry, the leader of Spade, was needed to give a contrast to the newly formed government. Both characters made this book better along with moving the remaining cast from previous stories in different directions. Adding some elements of fairy tale such as the Through the Looking Glass reference and other magical elements was creative and really helped the story feel new and exciting. You're left feeling so much hope emanating from these pages by the end of this story that you knew these people were going to be okay, and I was happy with that.

Olivia, to me, was the shining star throughout but she really reached her peak in Isaura. She remained her tough-as-nails self, but matured further than I expected. She took responsibility and that leader position that she had been avoiding for two books. She made choices that were difficult and really made them with a resolve that I don't think we would have seen at the beginning of this series. Despite what she tries to convince you of throughout, she is more than most people are, she is special. She is Aberrant. This final story solidified that for me and I am so proud of her. The purpose of a finale is to wrap up all the little loose ends and this book did that to a healthy satisfaction. Of course I would have loved to explore every nook and cranny of Spade and Cabal but there wouldn't be enough pages in the world to ever truly run over everything in this world, but as an ending....this rocked!- My Opinion- Buy it!

The soldiers shrug and look around for a few seconds more before disappearing across the grove to cover more ground. The helicopter lifts into the air and flies above the forest. Our tree sways under its down draft. My foot loses its grip on the branch and I slip, my hands grappling the biting bark as my legs flail out from under me, and Jack catches my hand just in time to keep me from falling. We stay that way—me with one hand on the branch, Jack clinging to my other hand and the tree for all he’s worth—until the sweat is pouring into my eyes and both of our muscles are screaming for relief. I haven’t heard the soldiers for probably five minutes, and the helicopter sounds at least two miles away. I finally let myself relax and Jack pulls me back up onto the branch, and I let my cheek rest on the bark. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. Jack sits down on the branch, his legs dangling on either side as he leans against the trunk. “I knew it would be like this. I knew it would be. I just didn’t imagine it would start so soon. That first week in the colony, I checked my back after leaving and entering every room.” His shoulders slump. “It was so strange to feel safe again. Jessa teased me every time I did it.” He looks at me and arches an eyebrow. “For being twins, you two are completely different. After a couple of weeks, I finally relaxed. I’m going to pick up the habit again pretty quickly.” I nod, and the tree bark scratches my cheek. I don’t know if I’ll ever stop checking my back.

Review:
 If I have ever complained about a heroine not being ballsy enough, which I know I have, then Resolutions takes the cake with Eve Taylor. She is a take-no-shit DEA agent at the heart of a dangerous drug lord's investigation and when she is taken captive by said lord, you think she might crumble and need a prince charming to save her but she does not. Now, there is a prince in this story named Dillon Mckenna, AKA Mac, but at the end of the day Eve is a partner in kicking-ass, not some damsel in distress. These two have history and I'm not even talking about on the job history, so when he is part of her rescue things get a little dicey. At the end of the day, however, they both end up learning a lot about themselves and just how well they compliment each other.

I don't have one iota of negativity towards Eve what so ever. She embodies everything I love in a female lead. Tough, focused, and doesn't need a man to help with her with anything, she completely takes control of situations and gets the job done. I loved that. No romance story would be complete without the "other" so of course we needed Mac to move the story along, but I loved how she put him in place at times when she needed and didn't let his Alpha-male attitude stop her from doing the things she deems right. She is the best at what she does, she knows it and she acts accordingly. I love a female character that has some good decision making skills and Eve certainly does.

Those characteristics in Eve are what propelled this DEA/drug lord/cop drama from borrowing and over-told to interesting enough to keep me glued to the page every second of the way. I am a little tired of men in these stories thinking they have to protect women and they shouldn't do this kind of job, but Eve solved that problem for me by letting Mac know exactly how she feels about all that nonsense. Their back stories combined with their tangible passion for each other made this story great and their journey to being where they are at the end of the book made it all worth it for me. - My Opinion- Buy it!

   I tried to pay attention to the rest of the lesson, I knew I needed to know the particulars of the project but it was hard to imagine doing it with Lochie. We had known each other since we were little, we started school on the same day and had been in most classes together ever since.

   I think my hatred started for him that first day. He pushed me into the sandpit where I landed with a decisive thud. All of his newly acquired friends laughed at me. I didn’t have any friends to come to my aide so I just had to push myself out of the pit and dust off the sand. I think I’ve been dusting off that sand every day ever since. And it was all because of Lochie.

   I was supposed to be nice to everyone, that was part of the deal. I had to be kind, friendly, and lovable. If I was anything but, then I could potentially be removed from the project. When I was little I might have been okay with being pulled, but not now. Not after I’ve spent seventeen years here.

   To lose my placing just because of Lochie would be like rubbing salt into my wounds – except a thousand times worse. So while I knew how I should act towards him, I still couldn’t. Not when one look at him made me want to pull my own eyeballs out of their sockets.

Tier says he loves Junco but I just can’t imagine that he does. I can’t. How could he? How could he love her and be able to sacrifice her for Lucan? It makes no sense to me. I’d choose Selia over Lucan every time.
But Tier is so focused on his fucking job, he pushes Junco away. While Selia and I were falling in love these past two years, Tier was trying to forget Junco ever happened. He pretended she never existed. He never said her name. He never secretly watched the screens when Kadian was reporting on her back in the Band.
He never once—not once—looked for her.

We knew where Junco was. That’s not the point. The point is, if that was Selia in that tank out in the desert, I’d have fucking taken over that lab and sat next to that damn tank for every second she was in there. I’d have made sure she wasn’t conscious during the change. Just the thought of Selia having to experience the pain of a morph without a virtual to distract her makes me want to choke.

If I was Tier, and I loved Junco, I would’ve done all those things.

And since he didn’t, and since Lucan didn’t either, then all that shit that happened to Junco in the tank was part of the plan.

And maybe I don’t really like Junco these days, but she was a friend once. I pictured myself with her back on Amelia during Fledge. She has that effect on people—she vibrates with a hum that calls to people. She’s got her own frequency, Arel used to say. Like she’s broadcasting a message that says, Come to me. Be with me.

But no one can be with her—because she is singular. She is above everything. She has no attachment to her Siblings, not like the rest of them do to each other. They are a team in and of themselves. Junco is the Seventh wheel. The odd one out. She has no partner. Moju has Soli, Tukker has Esta, Sariel has Irin.

But Junco has no one.

I suppose that’s what Gideon was. Junco’s pseudo-partner. He’s a Seven, after all. Gideon and Lucan were very tight during Junco’s captivity. Gid helped Lucan kill all kinds of people. They were like Team Death incarnate. So Gid also shared some of Junco’s childhood while he and Lucan were bonding over the kill. And Lucan shared that with the 039.

Gideon was a handler, not a partner. And yeah, I’m sure he’s got an attachment to Junco, but from the way Lucan tells it, he’s focused on the job he needs her to do.

Why couldn’t Gideon be our Seven? I’m sure he’d be more than happy to complete the mission.
But he’s not. Junco is.

Junco is hard-nosed and yet emotional in every wrong way possible. She’s small, but she fights like a rabid prairie lion, kills best friends, mothers, fathers, and anyone else who gets in her way. She’s better trained than most of my Aves warriors and she can shoot someone between the eyes from four thousand yards out. She’s part machine, part human, part avian and every bit of her is High Order.

Junco is dangerous. She is not good—in fact, she is probably evil. She is insane. She is unpredictable. She is angry, and sad, and defiant.

And she is our only hope.

J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. I've always had a problem with term Chicklit. Most people think it's full of sappy love stories and hot, hunky men with long flowing hair on the cover and everyone has hot sex and passionate romance. If I had to define a category that woman should read for themselves, High Fall would be in that category. This is a gritty, hard knocks version of a really strong woman kicking life's ass, having it kick hers' and trying to hang on for the ride.  The fact that this book is based on true life floored me past the point of loving of it and straight to admiration of the woman that had to go through it all. If you were to read this book without knowing anything about it, you'd say this is an action-packed roller coaster of life and loss, conflict and triumph and a girl turning woman, but knowing this was real for someone just about breaks my heart into teeny tiny pieces.

The book blurb calls this dramatic and emotional, that doesn't even come close to what I felt while reading. There were points where I could literally not go to sleep without finishing parts and it would suck getting up in the morning but it was so worth being tired. Annika is such a strong and well developed character that she instantly gets you on her side, and I know what you are thinking "Of course she is, she's real!" Well, to be honest I've read or watched boring real life accounts that try to play out all the action of experiences and they fail, miserably. This book succeeds in taking you on that journey and making you feel everything as if you were witnessing yourself right along with her. That is not easy, and I can't tell you how valuable that is for the story. I believed in her, I felt for her and I wanted to cry right along with Annika at points and that is not easily accomplished.

Taking it back to me chicklit point, this is the kind of story I wish was more associated with what women read because it isn't some lame, swoony, over-exaggerated nonsense. This is real. This is raw and worth every page involved. This isn't a fairy tale, this will grate on your nerves and show you something you might never have seen before. At the very least, it will take you on a road where a woman loves and losses but hands you a little hope for the future. - My Opinion- Buy it!

Kristen was born in Alabama in 1991 and still resides there today. She has been writing since the 6th grade. However, she did not begin to write fiction until she was 15. In 2009, Kristen had an idea that would spark the concept for Gemini of Emréiana that she would later write in 2011. During that time, she met her husband. They married in August of 2012.
